Help me give my students books with strong characters that look like them!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Moen's classroom raised $341
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are a curious and talented group of third graders in an ICT special education integrated classroom. Most of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch and come from low-income neighborhoods. We try to make our classroom an oasis, a happy and peaceful place that fosters learning and exploration.
It is important for me to provide my students with all of the resources they might not have otherwise since school is often the stepping stone to break the cycle of poverty in families.
I am passionate about what I do and seeing my students learning and growing justifies all of the hard work that I do.
My Project
The books in this project feature characters that are from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. It is often rare to find children's books that have non-white leads or strong female characters. Teaching at an all girls school in New York City it is important to me to have many children represented in our library.
Students can connect better to reading if they feel like they can relate to the characters.
Having a variety of cultures included in books can help ensure that every student is represented and feels included. It can also help students learn about other cultures that may not be represented in our classroom. Having a knowledge of cultures at a young age can help lead to inclusion and celebration of diversity for life!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
