Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"An assortment of hues that gives a child a realistic palette to color the people of the world" - Crayola Remember creating a perfect picture of your family and thinking, what color should I color their skin? Pink, Orange, Brown? My students ask themselves this question everyday.

My students are second graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

They are in a dual language class in which they are learning two languages at the same time. There are 10 boys and 11 girls between the ages of 7 and 8. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts every day even though a lot of times, because of economic hardship, their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family. Many parents are lacking time to spend with children and talk to them about the importance of education.

My Project

When students enter second grade they are expected to write about important moments from their lives. Moments that are significant to them. Usually this moments involve their families. When it is time to illustrate their stories, I always get the same questions. "Teacher what color do I use for my mom's/ brother's / sister's skin?" Why did Juan color her mom orange? or Why did Alondra color her dad brown? I strongly believe that arts and crafts supplies in every school should definitely include materials that reflect the various cultures of all children. These materials will teach children to understand and discuss what diversity means and how it applies to them. The class set of multicultural color pencils and the pencil sharpener will allow my students to make illustrations that truly reflect their own families and themselves. As they share their illustrations with each other they will learn to appreciate everyone's diverse backgrounds as well as their own.

The multicultural colored pencils will provide my students with the opportunity to make realistic illustrations of their families and the world around them.

Teaching them to accept each other for who they are. Please help my students accept and value the rich and diverse world we live in by providing them with the necessary tools.
