My Project
As current research continues to uncover the inequities in reading education and how our students of color, low socioeconomic status, and students with special needs require more systematic instruction, the same is being found for our general education students. I am currently seeing this in my first grade classroom each day. In order to close this gap, I need to provide my students with hands-on, research based strategies during their reading instruction.
My project would provide professional development in Orton-Gillingham’s structured literacy approach that is offered by the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education.
The course provides training in a science of reading-based pedagogy that supports English Language Learners, Special Education students, and general education students. It dives deep into strategies and structures that can be used to teach phonology, encoding, and decoding during whole group, small group, and tiered intervention reading lessons.
The knowledge gained during this training would immediately be put to use in my current first grade classroom, where many of my students are showing signs of reading distress.
Orton-Gillingham is unique and considered the gold standard in reading professional development because it provides actionable insight and strategies that support every kind of learner. With the knowledge obtained during this training, I am confident that I will have the tools necessary to support all of my students in their reading journey.
