Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For many of us, learning to read may not have been a struggle, but for my students, its' the most daunting one. For my high school aged emergent readers, a multi-sensory approach is key, and students need multiple means of representation to appropriately engage in the content being taught.

My students are AMAZING.

They are high schoolers empowered to do their best, but are limited by their intellectual, or multiple disabilities. My class is enrolled in a NYC Specialized School in a high poverty area of the South Bronx. They face cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges that many of us will never have to encounter, everyday. They are brave, resilient, eager to learn, and come to school with a positive attitude each and every day. Due to their cognitive deficits, and various disabilities compounded by dyslexia, delayed auditory processing, etc., the majority of my students have never learned to read. Those who learned, haven't been able to surpass a third grade level. Most of my students can identify and spell their first and last name, and a few basic sight words, but they are not able to engage in the high school curriculum unless it is read to them. We have been given programs to help them learn, (thanks to you!), but need another tool to access them.

My Project

We have been so blessed with the opportunity to use our new chromebooks, and subscriptions to Learning a-z.com programs, in addition to the programs our school already has been using. Over the past week and a half, we have been attempting to access these amazing tools. With trial, however, often comes error, and we have hit some rough water on our quest. Our classroom has a few sets of headphones, but not enough. We need more so that everyone can access the tools at the same time, without distraction. We also realized that we want to be able to record our reading progress orally, through a microphone and record the data to RAZ-kids.com's servers. These Califone microphones double feature headphone and microphone will enable us to each access the tools we need to learn to read in an efficient manner. As we are sometimes limited by a lack of 1:1 computer access, we may sometimes need a headphone splitter to help us all remain engaged! These tools are crucial tools on our path to read!

Giving high-school aged students with special needs the gift of literacy is probably the best one they could ever receive, but they need our help.

With the combination of these amazing programs, my instruction and these new headphone-microphone combos and splitters, we can make this happen. Thank you so much for your continued support for my students! We truly appreciate it!
