Let's make practicing something difficult and frustrating more engaging through multi-sensory experiences!
I teach preschool students with special needs (ages 3-5) throughout the community in their homes, preschool programs, and public school settings.
My students have a wide variety of needs, but one thing they often have in common are difficulties in their fine motor skills, that will impact their ability to learn how to write.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of art supplies that will provide a multi-sensory approach to practicing fine motor skills, including paint, glitter, rice, sturdy paper, scented stickers, and a squiggle pen. The materials I am requesting are intended to spark my students interest through a variety of activities and mediums, that will develop their foundational fine motor skills, such as hand strength, control, grasping, and imitation of basic lines and shapes needed to create letters. Because practicing these skills can be difficult and frustrating, children with special needs and sensory differences need materials that motivate and encourage them to participate, while exposing them to the sensory outlet they often crave. These foundational skills are essential to learning to write and draw effectively as my students move up to kindergarten.
By providing multi-sensory opportunities to explore art and creativity, my goal is to engage and motivate my special needs preschool students to develop foundational fine motor skills necessary when learning to write.
