Multi-sensory Pre-K Play to Promote SEL and CRSE in Art

Help me give my students manipulatives such as sensory cards and play dough to utilize in art in Pre-K and kindergarten to learn to form letters, express feeling and diversity for SEL and CRSE in a hands-on centers.

My Project

My students in grades PK-5 are a diverse and energetic mix of kids from various ethnic groups. Our school community is located in a low socioeconomic area of south NY. There aren’t any places for kids to experience art. Many of our students are ENL, special needs or new immigrants. The families of these students lack the means to take advantage of the art culture in NYC, elements and principles of art. Many of the parents work more than one job and/or speak another language besides English. This makes it hard for them to take their children to museums, explore the Internet, book signings or meet/greets for authors or artists to build question and discussion in for culture and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Through creative and visual art, which is hands-on and utilizes manipulatives, I hope to teach children to be able to represent experiences, emotions and individuality that they cannot verbalize.

They will also use letter formation to create visual stories with clay. Learning SEL and CRSE curriculum in pre-k is beneficial to enhance verbalization, expression, individuality which will enable students at an early age to collaborate, empower and utilize best practices in a school community.
