My Students
I teach Kindergarteners through 6th graders with learning disabilities and health impairments in a Special Education Resource Program. The majority of my students read 2 or more years below grade level. They struggle to be included with peers in class activities and have difficulty accessing the curriculum. Many of them have suffered years of discouragement and hopelessness because they have rarely felt successful. After all they have been through trying to learn, they then had to navigate online learning and endure isolation from support during our COVID year!
My students want to learn and can learn; I tell them every day that every problem has a solution and that we can find that solution together!
My classroom is about valuing each child for their unique intelligence, despite what the world says about people who learn differently. I listen to their struggles, analyze their growth, then use their strengths to build skills. They light up when they see that they can learn when they find the right strategy. The message I always hope to send is, “There isn’t anything ‘wrong’ with your brain. We just haven’t matched the strategy yet. Let’s match it and watch you Fly!”
My Project
The demands of sitting in a seat with a pencil & paper task or auditory instruction often place too much cognitive load on students who are struggling with maintaining their bodies and performing basic reading and calculating. Flexible seating gives my special needs students a way to self-regulate their mental and physical energy in order to better focus and participate in our small group reading, writing, and math activities.
My students have unique processing and they need multiple sensory strategies to learn at the rate of their peers.
These high-interest readers and tactile, visual, and kinesthetic sight word materials will help students master foundational reading and writing skills. Similarly, the visual math stories bring multiplication tables to life and help put math facts into their long term memory.
Finally, the Spot emotion set will provide some much-needed coping strategies for all of the stumbling blocks our pandemic year has introduced. Many of these students struggle to learn and yet have the most creative problem-solving approaches! They are motivated, hard working, and resilient. They are truly the future, and they deserve every chance to be successful!
