“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead. My students are limited in their opportunities to grow and communicate with other creative positive influences across the globe.
Our school is located in a small community, with many children from low income families.
The free and reduced students make up 30-33% of the student body. Eight-ten percent of the school population are multicultural students from a small variety of ethnic groups. Therefore, 92% of the school is made up of Caucasian students with limited opportunities to explore and broaden their horizons.
A project that incorporates the use of technology to enhance learning and open their eyes to new educational cultures will be a positive experience for students here at our school.
My Project
Written Language Arts classrooms will read multi-cultural children's literature enhancing writing opportunities, quick writes, reading responses, journal writing and penpal communication with cultures across the world.
Technology students will use Skype technology to communicate with schools in other countries. Students will interact with other students building relationship with other cultures to establish a more global sense.
Literature students will read multi-cultural chapter books that will give them opportunities to explore the world beyond their own community.
A Multi-cultural Peace Garden will be created at our brand new school in August 2011. We will create sculptures, rock gardens, and plant life for the landscaping grounds. Students will research, create and build multi-cultural, mosaic projects, etc. that represent the cultures around the world. This peace garden will be a way to bring world culture to enhance and educate a very small community.
“We allow our ignorance to prevail upon us and make us think we can survive alone, alone in patches, alone in groups, alone in races, even alone in genders.” --Maya Angelou
By bringing other cultures to our students we will greatly influence and broaden our students' horizons in a positive way!
Looking forward to new opportunities utilizing the technologies to make things happen! We will interact w/ other cultures through Skype technology, literature and a multi-cultural peace garden. Thank you.
