MudWatt Microbial Fuel Cells to Learn About Alternative Energy
Help me give my students these MudWatt kits to make microbial fuel cells, so they can learn about alternative energy from soil!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in rural southeastern Montana. My students have little access to many of the resources and opportunities afforded in more suburban or rural areas. In spite of this, my students conduct sophisticated research with a mobile lab that I have established. Through grants, or begging and borrowing, my students have access to a variety of equipment in our classroom to conduct their research.
They have competed at many regional, state, national, and international science competitions and won many awards, including a 1st and 3rd place award at Nationals.
My Project
Students will be learning about alternative energy and how mud can be used to make electricity. This will be an engineering activity, so students will be able to collect soil samples from different places and add substances to them to optimize the fuel cells. Then, they will test the mud using our ORP sensors, which measure electrical activity. Finally, they will learn about how the fuel cells are constructed and make their own. They will collect data over time to see if they can increase the power output of the fuel cells.
These fuel cells will be reusable, so I can use them for students in the future.
