Hello! I am an ESL teacher in a New York high school. My school serves high needs teens, most of who qualify for free lunch. Recently, my school has curtailed supply requisitions. This comes during a testing period when I must redouble my efforts to prepare my students.
ESL students often do not possess the background and cultural knowledge that allow other students to easily absorb unfamiliar and abstract concepts. They need to work in groups to be able to bridge, visualize and describe before they can make the jump to something new.
To this end, as a teacher I know how to design tasks that permit group learning and sharing. However, I need materials that I can no longer access from my school. I find that ESL students work well in groups, bouncing ideas off of each other to create a new body of knowledge. Currently, I am most in need of large amounts of newsprint paper and magnets. This paper provides an economical and environmentally sound way to effect various shared brainstorming, written response and visual representations to unpack new ideas. Held to the wall with the proposed magnets, these visuals are shared with the full group and become a classroom body of knowledge.
