Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our resources and activities are very limited due to low funds and an overall lack of parent and community support. Located in North Carolina, we are a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. My 2nd grade class of 15 students love hands-on, exciting and engaging activities and I am finding myself struggling to find the resources and centers to engage my students and push them to the next level. With it being such a low income area, my students are used to recycled books, and desks and chairs that have been used for years. I would really love to help my students reach their full potential by giving them new books to read and new flexible seating options to fully give them what they need to feel comfortable and simply respected in the classroom.

My Project

My students are used to recycled materials, books, manipulatives, activities. and furniture. The desks and chairs are all the same, the walls are plain white cement brick (which I have of course tried to make fun and bright) and the floors are plain white tile. I am hoping that with new flex seating options, my kids will be more motivated to learn and focus on their work. In 2nd grade, there are natural verbs/wigglers. These seating options will help lower distractions and make my classroom more inviting. I am also always looking for new resources for math centers, I am tired of giving them black and white games and activities and need more hands-on, interactive centers. Lastly, I need book bins for students to pick their own books to read and travel around the room with their seats and new book materials!
