Ms. Sims Sixth Grade ELA Book Club Launch

Help me give my students the opportunity to participate in book clubs! The books I have requested are all part of our approved book list, but unfortunately I do not have these books readily available in my classroom.

My Project

I am a sixth grade ELA teacher in a rural, South Carolina school. This will be my fourth year teaching and I am excited to launch classroom book clubs for my students.

The South Carolina Department of Education requires that any book that is going to be used for classroom instruction is approved by a vetting committee within the school.

With the introduction of book clubs, I have chosen several approved books for my students to read and enjoy, but the hurdle I am currently facing is obtaining sets of the approved books. I have several of the titles but unfortunately the majority of the titles will have to come from my own pocket if I wish to have them in my room.

The chosen titles for this years book clubs are ones that I believe reflect the demographics, interests and needs of the students I teach. Finding relatable characters and stories for the students I teach is one of my top priorities when choosing literature for my classroom. I have chosen books that I believe will resonate with the students who walk through the doors of my classroom. My goal is provide the environment and materials necessary to foster the life long love of reading and ability to "escape" reality and find themselves immersed in the pages of a book.

The books I have requested on this project will help me supply my classroom with the approved titles that will be used throughout the year for book clubs. I understand that there are several platforms for students to read books electronically, but I believe there is no better way to foster a love of reading than by giving a student a physical copy of a book.
