My students need 18 copies each of these beginning novels: Hitty: Her First Hundred Years, My Father's Dragon, Flat Stanley, The Littles, and Jake Drake: Bully Buster.
Lying in a hammock, turning each page, eagerly awaiting the twists and turns of a good book, this is the love of reading I hope to instill in my students. My goal is to enrich students' reading experiences by introducing them to some the best beginner’s novels and starting our own “Beginners Book Club”!
I teach an enrichment second grade class in a high poverty, Title I school. My students come from many walks of life but have one thing in common: they are impressionable. These students have been identified as “high-flyers” in second grade. The potential that these students hold is remarkable and it is my goal to go beyond test scores to enrich my students.
The love of reading starts at this young age. My vision as a teacher is to have my students realize that reading fulfills many purposes in life. There is nothing like the feeling of falling in love with a good book. However this love cannot be developed from the drone of, “Turn in your reading books to page 76”. These novels will provide the opportunity for students, that remarkable feeling of opening a book, awaiting each page turn and developing memories.
These novels will enrich my students as readers. Last year my class completed a novel study and gained a better appreciation for literature while also attaining skills in reading comprehension and fluency. I would like to expand these novel studies to form a “Beginners Book Club”. The book club would allow the students to read and think critically about the following selections: Jake Drake: Bully Buster, The Little’s, Flat Stanley, My Grandfather’s Dragon, and Hitty Her First Hundred Years. These novels will allow the students to develop the necessary reading skills and strategies to become life long readers. The study of these novels will also be expanded to other parts of the curriculum. Jake Drake: Bully Buster will allow us to explore the world of character education. Flat Stanley will take us around the globe in Social Studies, Hitty Her First Hundred Years will show us how history has changed our communities. The possibilities are endless!
With your help the love of reading starts today. You will make it possible for my students to develop into life-long learners. There is no way to imagine the impact that you can have on my students' lives. Your kind donation will put novels in the hands of young students that could inspire our future ambassadors, historians, journalists, and much more.
