This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are elementary-aged children (PreK/K-5) and attend public school in downtown Manhattan. I work with children who are entering school for the first time, a huge transition period in their lives, to children who are preparing to enter into middle school, another huge transition period, as well as all of the children in between. Many of the students I work with have one or more learning disabilities, behavioral conditions, or are in some sort of crisis. While these students will need extra support, this year will be a difficult transition period for all students in my school, as the COVID-19 pandemic has made this school year a more difficult transition than the past ones that we have known. Students are returning to school, in person, full-time, for the first time in two years. All students will have emotions that they will need help coping with, and as the school social worker, I will strive to be the best support that I can be for all students at my school.
My Project
The 2021-2022 school year will certainly be different from any school year we have known in the past. The prior two school years were unlike ones we have ever expected. Children were separated from their friends, their teachers, and their supporters in school. For some children, school is their home, and that home was stripped away from them. Many students endured the loss of family members, friends, and community members, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a worldwide health catastrophe that has affected all of us in such horrific and unfortunate ways. There will be a lot of emotions circling in the school building this year, and as the school social worker, it is my priority to ensure that all students have the smoothest and most comfortable transition possible, while supporting their social-emotional needs and academic success. I created this project to ask for help to obtain the items I need to be the best support I can be for my students this school year. As a social worker for children, I have always taught my students, even the little ones, that self-advocacy skills are essential in every stage of life. I teach my students that advocating for themselves and asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of and is crucial to success in life. This project is an example of what I teach my students, as right now I am advocating for myself (and them), to obtain what I need to be a successful school social worker this school year. Thank you all in advance for your kind support. I could not be more excited to bring my education, experience working with children, and love for children into the NYC DOE. My lifelong career has begun and I am forever grateful to you all for your support!
