My Project
In Mount Vernon, we serve a multitude of students from various backgrounds, but one thing that remains consistent throughout is that our district is lacking funding to provide the basics for our students. The common comforts in a classroom are supplied by teachers who are also suffering from the district's lack of funding. No matter the state of the financial crisis here, the students deserve colorful, engaging, and safe classrooms with the basics.
We are a performing arts school, and the children here have a passion for the arts.
Many struggle to perfect their craft due to the lack of funds and opportunities. The teachers at the school stay for long periods of time, offering their time and expertise to support perfecting and improving their crafts. These supplies would be helpful in creating an environment where they can stay for long periods of time if they choose it to be their safe space.
We spend a lot of time juggling our academics along with our arts, and the students often feel stressed out. The use of fidget toys and coloring sheets helps quell the anxiety, and we incorporate "Workday Wednesdays" into our schedule often, where scholars can choose to make up work they have left undone or take the period to relax. Having a well-equipped area to relax and feel safe is essential to the classroom culture.
Snacks are helpful because the school day is long, and energy levels shift constantly due to how demanding the day can be. Sometimes the snacks also supplement the lack of access to food throughout the day.
Our classroom library can use some updating with contemporary texts. Oftentimes times in order to keep the love of literature up, I suggest books that the scholars can see themselves in. The kids also often choose to use audiobooks.
