My Project

I am a new teacher and will be building my classroom for the first time. I strongly believe in the power of hands-on learning. I just completed a Master's thesis on math intervention strategies for elementary students that is heavily focused on hands-on representations of math concepts. My goal is to provide games and tools that extend beyond worksheets in my lesson plans. We need LEGO items, MagnaTiles, markers, and more.

Most math curricula provided for free for teachers do not come with materials to incorporate hands-on learning.

Hands-on math materials provide significant benefits for second-grade students by promoting active learning, engagement, and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. These tangible tools allow students to visualize and manipulate abstract ideas in concrete ways. When students physically interact with objects, they can see mathematical relationships more clearly, making concepts like place value, addition, subtraction, and basic geometry easier to grasp.

Benefits of hands-on materials:

Overall, using hands-on math tools makes math more enjoyable and less intimidating. When students can manipulate materials themselves, math becomes an interactive, fun experience, helping to build positive attitudes toward the subject and a lifelong love of learning, which is my goal for my students.

I have gotten what I can for free or used from other teachers, free piles, libraries, and the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse. However, some materials I have not been able to find secondhand. Help me give my students the best 2nd grade year possible!
