Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have trouble attempting to make real-world connections to many scientific concepts on the whiteboard at the front of our room. They try so hard to keep up, but their frustration is palpable. A comfortable and inviting gathering place for sharing our ideas would help us so much!
Sixth grade is a critical year-- when students are both eager to learn academic content AND to figure out just where they 'fit in' socially.
My students are no different! They come to school everyday so eager, with boundless curiosity and the strongest work ethic. Even though the resources provided by our urban school system aren't the best, my students are incredibly bright and have an enormous capacity to learn and succeed!
My Project
I want-- and NEED-- to get my students up and out of their desks! I do not wish to run a dictatorship in our class, one where the teacher holds all of the knowledge at the front of the room. I wish for my students to share a common gathering place where we are -all of us- EQUALLY valuable and worthy of an audience! It is on this carpet where we will participate in read-aloud stories, daily discussion toward solutions of real-world problems, opportunities for practice with engineering projects, and the completion of independent work in a comfortable space-- apart from the desks that restrain my students for up to 7 hours each day.
I am passionate about providing my students with everything they'll need to reach their greatest potential.
