Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consists of children from a low socioeconomic background. They are lovely, motivated and respectful children that are enthusiastic about learning. Specifically, I teach Social Studies to students from grades K-5. Since I am the only Social Studies teacher in the school, I frequently do not get to teach every class in the school. Our school has a population of over 750 students.

Engaging my students through my pedagogy is my main goal.

I notice that many of my students love art and doing art related activities, so try my best to incorporate art into my Social Studies lessons whenever possible.

My Project

I use art activities in the classroom to get my students motivated and engaged. I believe strongly that there are many types of learners and I strive to reach each type of learner through visuals, like PowerPoint slides, art work, photographs, artifacts and video clips. I also try to incorporate music whenever possible. If we are learning about the Civil War, I let students hear Civil War songs. If they are learning about the Underground railroad, students are exposed to songs that were used by escaping slaves as a code. If they are learning abut the Revolutionary War, students learn about Revolutionary War songs. I also believe that many students are gifted and/or captivated when you use art in instruction. For example recently, I was teaching students about Memorial Day. They learned many things about this very important holiday, but at the end they created a paper mosaic red poppy flower. I explained the significance of the poppy flower and how it was connected to Memorial Day. They loved this activity.

Having Crayola glue sticks is so important when I am doing art activities with my students, because they are not messy like the Elmer's liquid glue.

The Elmer's liquid glue often gets spilled on students' work or desks. I have to go from class to class teaching my Social Studies lessons. This glue has always made clean up easy. Additionally, the kid get a kick out of the fact that the glue looks blue, but dries clear. The top also functions as a stand for the glue as well. This allows students to always have the glue ready to use. As for the Twistable colored pencils it eliminates the need for messy sharpening of colored pencils.
