My Students

My 5th grade students are from a low income area of Jacksonville, FL. The crime rate is extremely high there, too. Today marked the 100 murder in the city, and it came from my school area. A lot of my students are raised by single parents. They do not have books at home to read. This is my 30th year teaching inner city children! I love it!! My 5th graders are in need of more books for guided reading so we don’t have to share books with other classes. Thank you.

My Project

My fifth grade students will benefit greatly by having these books to read! They will work in small guided reading groups with the teacher; me! My students are behind in their reading, so these books will help them get on grade level, too. Students will gain confidence in their reading by reading with their peers in small groups. As a struggling child reader, I overcame my weaknesses, and my students will learn how to do that. They will learn to love reading! Each child will also be able to take these books home to practice. They don’t have a lot of books at home, if any!
