it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the privilege of teaching nine K-2 students in an autism Special Day Class (SDC). These students are bright and vivacious, and they have varying and unique special interests. They are curious learners who love to explore the world around them.
It is incredibly difficult to keep my students' different sensory needs engaged on a tight budget!
My students are not traditional learners. They need to have all of their 5 senses stimulated (or muted) in various ways in order to feel safe and happy in a bustling classroom of young and emerging learners.
The solar system kits are for all students to build a solar system interactively. Some of the individual solar system items from Lakeshore in my cart are for one of my students who loves the solar system. The inflatable set will allow him to engage in safe total physical movement as he plays and learns.
The liquid sensory windows are visually calming for students who get overstimulated by visual distractions easily. Star builders soothe one of my students who loves building items and enjoys sorting items by color. This keeps him grounded and keeps him from engaging in eloping or other more dangerous behaviors.
Stacking letter blocks are a great way to teach phonics and build words for students who are not appropriately engaged by worksheets, cards, or other two-dimensional manipulatives. Foam sensory paint allows students to do written work and arithmetic while they are still developing fine motor skills. Several of my kindergarteners are still not comfortable using a pencil or crayon to write their letters and numbers. I want them to still engage in the content as they emerge in their fine motor skills.
Kinetic sand is for a handful of my students who love to play in sand and dirt.
