Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students love to express themselves & be creative! I work in a Title 1 school and I teach Kindergarten through 5th-grade art. Most of my students come from high-poverty backgrounds. School is a safe haven for most of these students but some are struggling with being back in school after the pandemic. I strive to provide my bright students with a safe & positive space to help them become motivated and successful.

I'd love to incorporate a calming/reading corner in my classroom for my students to practice identifying feelings and emotions to better manage stress, self-regulate and control their impulses.

The calming corner will include a book library, bean bag chairs and pillows for flexible seating, an inviting area rug, soothing string lights, an accessible cart with sensory toys/art activities, a lamp for additional lighting and framed motivational posters. This mindful space will greatly aid classroom management and help decrease inappropriate classroom behaviors.

I also included basic art necessities such as Crayola markers, crayons & Sharpies. My students use these supplies all year long for their art projects and lessons. One of their favorite art projects is mask making so the plaster gauze, acrylic paint & Modge Podge sealer will be greatly appreciated by my students. I think this project will continue to greatly impact my student's learning, mental health and success in school.
