Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom of special education and low performing students is located in one of the largest school districts in the country. It is also one of the districts hardest hit by recent budget cuts and the poor economy. We are a very low income school with the vast majority--over 97%--of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
In the world of high-stakes testing, my students have increasingly felt the pressure to perform. All of my students have so far in previous grades failed to meet adequate standards on the state assessment, with more than half receiving a Level 1 of 5. Consequently, my students have become inundated with district pushed and administration mandated state assessment preparation packets--all copied in black and white. The students are faced with these thick black and white packets of difficult material every day.
The hope of this project is to be able to purchase HP ink cartridges for our classroom printer. In doing so, I can provide color copies of important materials like maps and graphs for my students. These materials are very difficult to read and learn from in black and white. Additionally, the HP ink cartridges can be used to print spelling words which have spelling and phonetic patterns emphasized through color coding. These strategies appeal to and benefit my visual learners, particularly many of my special education students.
So please, I am asking you, help add some color and clarity to my students' day by helping to fund this project. You will make it possible for my visual learners to see and therefore succeed.
More than half of students from low‑income households
