My Project
My name is Ms. C. and I have recently entered my first year of teaching at West Dallas Junior High School! I am a mid-year hire. I need help to turn their school year around and prepare my eighth grade ELAR students to pass their STAAR tests and enter high school next year.
Ninety-seven percent of the students at my school come from a household whose annual income places them below the poverty line.
It is my job as a teacher to not only help my kids achieve their academic goals, but also to support them as the mentor and authoritative figure that so many of them lack at home. Many of these students are behind academically by several regrade levels. I am attempting to bridge the gap and give them the writing and reading comprehension skills that they are lacking.
I have created a reward system that motivates my students to go above and beyond and help themselves and others. Since putting this system in place, I have seen amazing results and students who previously were shy and reserved, have gone out of their way to succeed in class. The snacks on my list are to reward them for their hard work and encourage them to keep going above and beyond.
Our school uses an online curriculum, but students tend to use their provided technology for other recreational purpose and often don’t complete online assignments. I am attempting to switch over a lot of my teaching to paper to avoid these distractions, which is why I am asking for a printer and lots of paper! I think this will help my students focus better in class and create better work over all.
