Ms. Adler's Speechie Students Succeed with Supplies!
My students need developmental play toys! Nothing brings out language more than play and my students desperately need toys to help them learn to have fun while talking and answering questions! Toys like play doh, doll houses and toy people help them to make connections between their "play story" and their own lives while using their imagination to fill in the gaps.

My Students
Hello! Welcome to Ms. Adler's speech room!
I am a speech and language pathologist at a public elementary school in East Harlem, NY. All of my students receive special education services and all need specific help with vocabulary, reading, writing, conversing, story-telling...etc. My students range in age from 4 years to 12 years old but many are communicating at a level much below their chronological age. As a small group instruction based program, I am often overlooked when it comes to funding for supplies. All supplies, games, toys and books I currently use with my students I have funded myself.
My only goal in working with my students is to enable them to become effective academic and social communicators. Unfortunately, this can be quite challenging as each of my students are delayed in the areas of speech and communication. We have even larger hurtles to jump but with your help, I know I will be better equipped to help my students reach their goals.
My students are the ones who struggle the most.
They all have increasing difficulties within their language skills - skills that they need to have in order to be successful in school. Most of my students struggle to read, write and understand and use language in the way that our schools require. As a special education provider, 100% of my students receive some type of special education services.
Even though my students face more challenges than the average student, they are a truly hard working bunch. They enjoy coming to school everyday, and although it often takes them twice as long to learn specific concepts, they work tirelessly to do so. They have classroom teachers that work overtime and many special education providers that enable them to be the best students they can be.
Our school is located in East Harlem, NY and has a very high poverty rate. Our students come from many different backgrounds - foster care, homeless shelters...etc. Often, the only language stimulation they receive throughout the day is within our school building.
My Project
We are asking for help getting developmental toys. Play therapy is often the key to unlocking a child's language skills. They can learn to ask and answer questions, tell a story, retell actions, follow complex directions, learn new vocabulary words and many more things with developmental toys. All of the toys I am requesting are specifically related to language skills and developing a child's imagination. In addition, these toys serve as great motivators to have children work through and complete more academic tasks!
At this point, I am unable to personally purchase anymore materials for my students.
These toys will enable me to work with students of all levels in a fun, developmental manner. I have seen the amazing ways in which developmental play can help a student's language skills grow and these toys will help me to further this type of play therapy within my speech class. My student's will love them!
