it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are growing up in a fast-paced, urban environment and don't often get the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the natural world around them. In an effort to help them commune with nature, manage stress, and spend intentional time in our parks and green spaces, my students and I have formed our school's very first bird watching club! With your help, we will be able to secure all the supplies we need to make this club a success.
Learning how to exist in nature starts at a young age and is an important part of creating safe and inclusive spaces.
Historically many marginalized communities have been excluded from the birding world. We hope to help change that history with our club, and we hope to provide access for our students to experience the many mental and physical health benefits of bird watching. Here in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, we are lucky to have walkable access to many parks. These parks serve as urban oases for as many as 400 different native and migratory bird species.
The items requested such binoculars, bird identification books, and field notebooks will be used by the students to learn about, identify, and observe the many bird species we will encounter. Twice a week, the students and I will set out to a local park. With your help, I will be able to provide each student with a set of binoculars, a field notebook, and bird identification books to share. Help us make our birding dream a reality.
