Help me give my students books to read! Books are something many of us take for granted, but most of my students do not have access to books to read! Even our school library is under stocked!

My Students

N.P. High School is 1 of 12 high schools in the Rochester City School District. The total minority enrollment in the district is 94%, and 92% of students are economically disadvantaged. Our school specifically has a disproportionate amount of special education students as well as English Language Learners. Despite the obstacles that stand in their way and the inequity of their educational opportunities, my students want to do well. They have the desire to learn, build skills, gain knowledge, and challenge themselves. They are ambitious and dream of being successful, contributing members of society.

My Project

Do you remember getting hooked on a series of books as a child? Think of the anticipation and excitement you felt waiting for and then finally reading the prized next installment in your favorite series (Harry Potter)! Most of my students have never been able to feel that excitement and joy of waiting for and then finally devouring the newest books in their favorite series because they lack the resources at school and at home to provide books for them to read. I can say without a doubt that my students are inquisitive, voracious readers who are just waiting for someone generous soul to put a book in their hands. A book that is theirs to keep and that they can keep and cherish forever.
