My Students

Have you ever been sitting in a classroom and the teacher requests that you take out some basic supplies and your stomach begins to turn as you look around seeing who you haven't borrowed from lately?

If you look at our high school's API (807), our attendance rate (98%) or the percentage of graduates who attend some form of post high school education (97%), you might think we have a privileged clientele.

In reality, we have 70+ percentage of students on the free lunch program; many of our students eat just two meals a day, the two our school provides. In the class room, there is often a need for me to provide basic student supplies which I have done for years out of pocket and am happy to donate what they need to function and succeed. I find myself, as my own five children are requiring more of my finances, that I am financially struggling to also provide for my 191 students' needs. The students at our school have opted out of attending one of the comprehensive schools in the area and have opted to attend our school which is a smaller campus with a desire to challenge, motivate and prepare these children to go to college.

My Project

Having my class stocked with basics such as paper to make a snazzy final draft, white out to avoid messy cross outs, and 3X5 cards to create study cards that kids can take and use as needed means that they no longer have to borrow from a friend and feel embarrassed they do not have the basics. I want any child from my school to feel like they can come to me for what they need as they always have done and I want to be able to not stress over not being able to afford to help out as needed.

The broad impact here is that many students without means will get the extras they need to complete projects and assignments without stress or worry.

They will come to my well stocked public cabinet and take what they need.
