My Students

I am a special education teacher for fifteen students in first through third grade. Most of our day is spent within the regular classroom, but small groups come to my resource room a couple times a day to work on our different goals. Our small school is in a very rural area and everyone is like family. My students have their struggles, but love coming to school and almost always have a positive attitude about their learning.

My Project

I teach students with learning and behavior disorders and a wide range of sensory issues. I also have students with some pretty rough backgrounds who have a hard time coming to school and learning with everything they have going on at home. I got the idea for the calm down corner because there is such a huge need for some of my students to have a place they can just go and have a little peace and quiet for a few minutes so they can reset. Some don't even have the option to have time to themselves at home, so they have no chance to quiet their mind for learning. With these items they can relax in a nice, cozy beanbag chair inside their own little space and come out ready to tackle the day!
