Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My school has a very diverse student body. They come from various racial groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is the diversity of my school that makes it a great place to be. It is important to introduce them to high-quality, diverse literature. A 2018 study from the University of Madison Wisconsin found that only 23% of children's book depicted a character from a diverse background.
I am trying to empower my students with literature that reflects their culture and show them that they are also represented.
By introducing my students to high-quality, award winning diverse literature I can show all students that they matter too.
I have recently taken a Teaching Literature course through Nevada State University and learned about how underrepresented minorities are in literature. Through learning about literature awards and reading chapter books that feature diverse characters I have gained an appreciation about how hard these books are to get in the hands of students. Having these texts that depict characters that remind my students of themselves in their classroom will inspire my students to read.
