My students need 14 high-interest books, such as the Millennium Trilogy and some war-themed Walter Dean Myers titles, to increase their choice reading options.

My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Many of my students have not discovered that reading is not just for "some people"--it's for everyone.
The students I teach are small-town young adults.
Many of them experience the world outside our town only through television, movies, and video games. Unfortunately, few of them have ever willingly entered the world of books, largely because few of them have ever been able to choose high-interest books to read from.
My Project
But few of them have ever been invited to the worlds that Stieg Larson creates in his whodunit thrillers. They haven't all had a chance to witness Ellen Hopkins' characters struggles against substance addiction. Walter Dean Myers' stories of war (or Brian Turner's poems from Iraq) haven't invited any of my reluctant male readers to lose themselves in a book. Patricia McCormick hasn't yet had the opportunity to shock any of my students with her tale of trafficking in Sold.
These high-interest reading opportunities, which some students will remember all their lives, only cost as much as a book.
You can give students their first positive, can't-put-the-book-down experience with reading. You can open up that world to them. I invite you to do that, effectively bringing the whole world to our small town classroom.
