This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our class, we are special because we learn how to think, not what to think - we learn by questioning. There are profoundly stubborn questions in our world, ones that literacy and inquiry can help address. As the instructional leader in the room, why would I ask my students to do anything I wouldn't do? My students are high-needs, and that's fine by me. They need the love and care of structured learning activities, and they need to see teachers who not only show the passion and energy to go the extra mile, but also have the expertise and credentials which reflect a knowledge of what teachers should know and be able to do.
The students I work with are mostly first-gen college applicants, and face overlapping barriers to arriving at the type of success and safety that we take for granted as a human right.
This project ensures that I meet the high standards of excellence required to help remove these barriers.
My Project
Students who work with National Board Certified Teachers show higher academic gains. After fifteen years in the classroom, there can be no stagnation, no retreat to old lessons - only forward progress to audit my work and press forward with intentional content and pedagogical development that will best serve the students I work with. Parents need to know their children work with teachers who are highly effective - not just by the metrics set by their local schools, but by national standards of quality and excellence. Anti-racist teaching is teaching which is specifically designed to ameliorate the structural inequities children of color face. Mr. Pfeffer's journey towards NBPTS certification is the logical and also the moral next step in his development for being the best teacher possible for whichever children are with him in the classroom.
