My Students

Have you heard some of the music children listen to today? Many of the pieces that they listen to are produced on a computer program. I would much rather the students learn on real instruments that they can practice first hand.

My school is a diverse population of students that are all eager to learn.

They enjoy music but they would like to have a more hands on approach. We are a semi-rural school that is gradually becoming more urbanized and is known for it's positive behavior support team. It is a community school, although there are several students that are bussed in for a variety of reasons. We have an ever increasing population of English Language Learners. Last year's data indicated that 58 percent of our students were economically disadvantaged.

My Project

I am requesting a set of 15 ukuleles. The ukulele is an instrument that is easy to learn, easy to teach and very gratifying to play. With ukuleles in the hands of students, they will learn about traditional music from the area that they live in, as well as inspire them to continue their musical education for the rest of their lives. I play in a band that plays traditional old time music and with the knowledge that I have and an instrument that they can play they will gain an understanding of where they come from and on an instrument that is accessible to them. I hope to be able to perform with the ukulele's in a concert situation, teach them about proper care of instruments and instill in them a willingness to learn music outside of the music classroom.

I want students to be lifelong musicians.

I find that many adults do not consider themselves musicians even though they played an instrument in school or they enjoy listening to music. By giving the students the ability to play an instrument that is not only inexpensive, but fun and gratifying, I hope that they will make their lives more musically fulfilling and be musicians for life.
