Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love that my students are at a place in time where they are discovering themselves. One of those curiosities that arise with my scholars is the ability to read and understand the texts that they come across. I have very eager, and bright-eyed 6th graders who have 3 years to really find their niche in an environment of learning.
I am currently building the culture of reading in my classroom, and I have so many students who actually have an interest in figuring out where they want to go in the future.
I am the bridge and for the first time in my life I have young minds who are very much interested in crossing that bridge with me to the side of accomplished learning.
My students are still learning about themselves, just as we all are, but the I believe that I can learn from my students just as much as they can learn from me. I am very excited to be their instructor this year as I hope to foment their thirst for reading and acquiring knowledge.
My Project
At my school we have established the strong culture of "D.E.A.R" or "Drop Everything And Read." The goal is that for 20-25 minutes students are vigourosuly reading the book of their choice, and that after they are finished with their reading they can take an "Accelerated Reader Quiz" on the content of their novel and gain points for passing the quiz.
It is my firm belief that when students read books in which they request, they fully gain confidence in their reading abilities, and their willingness to learn.
I am confident that when students see these new books that they have energetically asked me to get for them, they will not only have an appreciation for receiving them; but they will realize that a teacher cares for them, and has their best academic interests at heart.
