Moving to Music: Parachutes, Ropes, and Rhythm!

Help me give my students a parachute, a stretchy band, and Chinese jump ropes to promote movement, rhythm skills, and explore culturally diverse dances.

My Project

Our music classroom is ready to move! I’m requesting a parachute, Chinese jump ropes, and stretchy bands to bring more movement into our lessons. My students are energetic, creative, and love expressing themselves through music. They come from diverse backgrounds and learn in different ways, and they thrive when given opportunities to move, collaborate, and explore music in hands-on ways. Movement activities help make music accessible and joyful for all learners.

These tools will help students engage physically with music while building rhythm, coordination, and cooperation.

The parachute will be used for beat-keeping games, musical form activities, and team-building exercises. Stretchy bands will help students explore tempo, dynamics, and ensemble coordination through movement. We’ll also explore cultural connections, such as using Chinese jump ropes to teach Tinikling-inspired dances from the Philippines, supporting our goal of being a more culturally responsive classroom.

These materials will support kinesthetic learners, promote collaboration, and create opportunities to explore music through culturally responsive practices. Movement brings music to life and with your support, our classroom will become a space where students can connect to music in deeper, more joyful ways.
