A typical day in my classroom involves three math classes, grades five through eight, who are receiving intensive mathematics instruction through the use of common core standards, technology, hand on materials and visually stimulating materials.
My students are middle school students who have been identified as having a learning disability or cognitive impairment.
They are from the South SIde of Chicago and receive mathematics instruction in a special education classroom. My school is a low income, low performing school that has been identified as making great academic growth. The students I teach are precocious and enjoy mathematics.
My Project
The students in my classroom would benefit from the whiteboard that I am requesting because we are constantly working on problems together and in small groups. Many of them are visual learners and learn best when they are able to view eachother's and my modeling of math work. The Blackboard in our classroom is antiquated and causes the students to have chalk all over them throughout the day and it gets on everything. We do have access to a SMARTboard, but due to technology issues, it is not always available for use. We don't have a space for writing daily objectives and we could use the board for having "problems of the day" and a homework corner.
The donations given for our whiteboard will allow the class to be more modern and provide another space for students to practice authentic mathematics work on a daily basis.
Students will benefit from having more work space in the classroom, when work space outside of their desks is so limited.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
