Moving on After Hurricane Harvey

My students need a bluetooth speaker to allow for a tranquil environment during yoga, yet lively and motivating during workouts and games. The yoga mats give more students an opportunity to feel safe and calm.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Before you walk into my school, you may see on paper that we are a Title 1 school with a majority of students receiving free or reduced lunch with limited resources for our students. However, what you will see in person is a dynamic group of young, driven leaders, who through "The Leader in Me" Process are making their mark in our world. We are a Lighthouse Leader in Me/Magnet Fine Arts school, which has helped transform all of our students into global thinkers who believe they have a chance in life. We also went through Hurricane Harvey and many families were displaced and left with nothing.

My Project

My students have been greatly affected by Hurricane Harvey this school year. They were trapped in their houses for days and many have been displaced and have had to start over. Parents and guardians are doing their best to recover after this hardship, but often times it leaves students in a rough area and stuck inside apartments. It will ease a lot of parents' minds as they begin to rebuild their lives for their families.

These materials will allow a new after school program where students will be able to be outside and get some exercise in a safe and loving environment.

The yoga mats and speaker will give students an opportunity to learn how to calm down in stressful situations. Students will have opportunities to play in sports such as basketball and soccer, which many cannot afford to pay for an off campus team. These materials will truly help students become more aware of how exercise is extremely important to their life.
