My Students
When was the last time you've taken a pencil to the spools of a cassette tape?! Many of my students have experienced the frustration of a loose cassette tape in recent months. Help us move into the 21st century!
My students are seventh and eighth graders who currently read below grade level.
My class is an intervention that delivers individualized and adjusted reading instruction to move students to grade level. Class enrollment is limited to twelve so that students may receive individual attention to help meet their academic needs.
My Project
My students benefit from listening to an audio book as they read. Audiobooks present support with grade level books. A narrator reads the text aloud, modeling how good readers read - through fluent reading, phrasing, attention to punctuation, and proper pronunciation. Audiobooks also provide my students with the experience of reading books that are above their reading level, but of high interest. Many of my struggling readers will choose to read text above their level when an audiobook is available. The audiobooks allow struggling readers the opportunity to read what their friends are reading, which is important to middle schoolers. Most of our audiobook collection is in the form of cassette tapes. Although we have begun to build a digital library, we do not have digital players for student use. Funding this project will provide my students with greater access to audiobooks.
Much instructional time is currently spent teaching students how to use and troubleshoot outdated technology (cassette tape players).
Students often get frustrated with this technology and abandon the audiobook. Putting iPods, technology students are familiar with, into my students' hands will ease a frustration with technology, raise interest in using the audiobooks, and allow for more instructional time to be spent on improving students' reading skills.
