Moving Forward with Technology in the First Grade Classroom
Help me give my students the tools they need to be successful in the classroom. Technology is a big part of our day and the headsets and wired mice would help to keep our classroom moving forward.
I have a very enthusiastic class of 1st graders. They have been working really hard to learn how to navigate their Chromebooks and access the different sites we use. Technology is a very big part of our classroom experience and an extension of my hands. This year during a class party, we had a mom, dressed as a witch, come to mix up a witch's brew. She had all the ingredients written out but could not find a good place to display them. I suggested she might want to use the doc. cam. One of my students was totally taken back, tipping his head to the side asked her, "Don't you know about technology?" It appears he thought everyone, even witches knew about technology.
My Project
We recently went online for a few days and as I zoomed with my students, it was easy to see how having headphones makes a huge difference not only in the classroom, but in their homes as well.
Headphones for each student can really make a difference in their ability to stay focused and on task both in the classroom and in the event we go remote for a short time.
In addition, our Chromebooks have a touchpad but the children can navigate much easier using a mouse. This speeds up the online learning process and helps them accomplish their daily reading, writing and math goals.
In our classroom, not only do we use a lot of technology, but students also use a variety of traditional tools. They have their own small, personal whiteboards they use to practice math computations and phonemic and literacy skills. Our supply of dry erase markers and erasers has dwindled.
Also, students use science journals to enhance their understanding of the science concepts taught in class. These science concepts are solidified as students add crayon drawings, and clipped and glued-in diagrams and illustrations to their journals. Additionally, students extend their science experience by creating three-dimensional play-doh models of habitats, plant structures, solar systems, etc.
The acquisition of these much-needed supplies will greatly enhance our first graders' classroom experience.
