My Students

My amazing students attend an urban PK-8 elementary school. Students in our school visit the library once a week and they love to check out books (when the library is open). More than getting books from the library, they LOVE listening to stories. While my library is full of books, it is sorely lacking in new high quality picture books that have been written in the last few years. The funding for books has declined in recent years and we have very few high quality picture books in our eBook collection.

My students are becoming pros at finding ebooks to read during remote learning.

Many of those students have come to the US in the last couple of years from places such as Syria, Nigeria, and Nepal. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. My students love to read and discuss what they are reading with their families. My school is one of the most diverse schools in our city. My students are readers! They really love listening to stories.

There are so many good books out there for me to read to students! My students need new books that they can relate to!

My Project

I just know that the students at my school are excited about voting for the Monarch Award and to read these titles together as well as discuss them. Once we are done reading all of the books, they get to vote for their favorite. Gaining access to these titles will allow my students to read the books, learn about the authors, and connect with their families. In order to give every book a chance to be read in a timely fashion, we need to start reading them sooner than later.

The books on the list for Monarch Books are selected by a hard working committee of school librarians who carefully select these books after reading hundreds of titles.

All the students in my school will be able to enjoy them. During this time of hybrid learning for students in Chicago, I am requesting a variety of ebooks and hardcover books. My students' interest in ebooks has skyrocketed during the last year, in part because for once they all have access to devices and I want to keep that momentum moving forward. In total, I am asking for 37 brand new amazing books that move us beyond our basic books.
