My Students
Childhood obesity is becoming a bigger problem in early childhood years. Establishing healthy habits in a child's foundational years will help to create long lasting healthy lifestyles.
Our class is a Pre-K for students between the ages of 3-5 with special needs.
Their disabilities differ, but most are placed on the Autism spectrum. We are located on an elementary school campus and are the only Pre-K in the district. My students have their days planned full of interventions, assessments, and therapy sessions. They are all such little troopers that face great difficulties daily. When they come to school, I want them to be excited and happy. School should be challenging, but there's no reason it can't also be fun!
Despite their disabilities, the students in my classroom are just like any other preschoolers. They love coming to school and exploring their environment in hands-on ways. We love music, dancing, and art (especially the messy kind!), but our favorite time of the day is story time! If you were to visit our classroom, you would probably be introduced to our favorite book, "Pete the Cat," within the first five minutes of your arrival, and possibly even sooner!
My Project
I have requested a series of musical CDs that involve movement and dancing. My students love to dance and move around the classroom, but we lack a variety of songs to pick from. Having a library of music to pick from will enable our fitness and dance time to expand, in result providing my students with more daily exercise. In addition, my students will be able to practice different critical physical movements such as jumping, hopping, galloping and skipping. Thus providing them with a chance to master skills necessary for their future years in physical education.
Teaching young students how to live healthy and active lifestyles is a crucial part of early childhood programs.
Our classroom team wants to expand its curriculum past the ABC's and 123,s by creating healthy and active students, with life long fitness habits.
