My students need new and exciting sensory items to get them moving and to maintain their focus!

My Students
I am a Special Education Teacher at a funky, new, K-8 elementary building. Our school is very unique in that we have a diverse population, Spanish is taught daily from Kindergarten on, and we have multi-age classes. We also do project based learning so kids are out on field studies almost weekly.
Our students are hungry for hands-on experience and love getting out "into the field." Kids feel comfortable to be themselves and not follow the crowd at our school.
Diversity is celebrated and embraced, and kids truly understand the meaning of "what is fair is not always equal."
My Project
We are looking to add some fun, high quality items to our sensory area. Many of our students struggle with sitting still and maintaining focus at their desk. This project will help more than 30 students in grades K-8.
We have implemented sensory breaks for these kids and have seen great success in their ability to self-regulate and maintain focus.
We know kids need opportunities to move throughout their day, and these breaks are serving as a way to be proactive and give them the chance to participate as much as possible with their peers. Sensory breaks give our kids the chance to move and groove at appropriate times so they can engage with their classmates. Some of the items requested are things to help keep the kids engaging with their peers in their gen. ed classroom such as weighted/pressure vests and a weighted lap pad/blanket. We have been borrowing a few of these and need to return them but are seeing results with our kiddos! I also requested a large bean bag and a peapod (which is like an inflatable boat) to add to the variety of sensory input our space has to offer, because some kids just need to crash or feel a hug-like sensation! Another cool item requested is the sensory "stepping stones" which will give my friends a chance to get moving and feel different textures under their toes. The addition of all of these items will make our sensory space the best in the valley!
