My Students
A typical day in our classroom varies from working on academics, fine motor, life skills, sensory needs & so much more. Our students need assistance on how to function in today's world so we try and focus on a lot of real life skills in our classroom including how would they function in general ed.
My classroom is a self contained classroom with students with autism ranging in grades 2nd and 3rd grade.
Our school is a Title 1 school which means that the majority of our student ratio are at a poverty level and therefore qualifies for free or reduced meals. In fact, 63% of our entire school qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
Our elementary school has an amazing autism program that is designed to meet the needs of our students for small class settings and highly structured. We currently have seven teachers with classrooms with low functioning students with autism. Our class is constantly busy to help keep them on task but sometimes, they need more to help them get through the day.
My Project
A big portion of our day is to learn how to function in today's world including in the general education mainstream classroom. I would love to see our students out there with the general education students but they are not quite at that level yet. A lot of them have sensory needs which makes it hard for them to sit still. The soft seats are a great tool to make the seat softer for them to be able to concentrate. Although sitting still in school sounds like an easy task for people, our students have trouble with this task. Sometimes they need that extra pressure on them to help them sit whether it's the Dolphin wrap to go on their shoulders or their laps or the weighted StarFish pillows. If they need even more pressure, a weighted blanket and body sox's help them even more. I've seen non-verbal students use more words when they have that extra pressure on them so they feel comfortable which is awesome to see!!
This project would make a huge impact on our classroom by helping our students with meeting their sensory needs and able to focus.
Learning how to sit and wait sounds like an easy task to a person but for a student with autism, it is a very hard task for them to master. Helping them concentrate when they feel more comfortable with their bodies, the possibilities are endless on what they can do!
