This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are the youngest population at our school and all have some type of special need or developmental delay. COVID has impacted them drastically by hindering their normal development of gross motor and fine motor skills. Their opportunities to play outside, go to parks, take developmentally appropriate classes and even play with kids their age was limited for two years.
Now, these little ones are back in school and do not have the foundational skills that are needed to sit in a seat, hold a pencil, use scissors, or even know where their body is in space.
Through my experience as a special education teacher, I know the positive impact that building in motor activities can have on our students. Giving students a seat that still allows them to move helps them to focus on academics and not what their body is doing. Giving them opportunities to climb up and jump down in a safe manner gives their little nervous systems what they need to regulate themselves more appropriately and again they are able to then focus on the teacher. These items on my wish list give my students the movement and calming opportunities they need to be successful in the classroom.
