My Students

If you asked pretty much any child which instrument they most enjoy playing, chances are they would say "DRUMS!" Although there are many other instruments used in music class, drums are the driving force in music. The excitement is palpable when the children come to music and see the drums out.

I teach 530 students in grades K-5 in general music.

This year, approximately 42% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. About 48 of our students are homeless this year. Some of these students live in old motel rooms with their families. Our school is a Title 1 school. We have about 9% Hispanic students, 20% African American, plus an assortment of students from other countries. I see my students once a week for a forty-five minute music class, and for the majority of my students, their weekly music class is their only exposure to "real" instruments. I want to be sure that the instruments they use in music class are not only beautiful to look at, but also speak to their spirits by having a beautiful sound.

My Project

This year, instead of being in a music classroom, I am teaching music on the stage, in our school auditorium. This makes storing instruments difficult. I noticed these Sound Shapes and realized that they would require very little storage space, and because they are small and lightweight, the children would be able to play them and move around on the stage at the same time. I can envision my students accompanying singing games, like Tideo, with these beautiful hand drums, as they play the game. They can march, play the drums and sing Yankee Doodle. Instead of just sitting and singing This Little Light of Mine, they can improvise drum patterns to play as they sing and move around the stage. They can learn about call and response as a characteristic of African music, by singing and playing their drums in response to what I sing and play. They will be able to march a steady beat and play different rhythm patterns on the drums at the same time.

Music can raise a child's spirits and help him to release tension that might be due to difficult home situations, or struggles in the classroom with academics or language.

Movement can also raise a child's spirits and release tension. When we are able to combine these two things, using hand drums, singing and movement, a child can forget about life's difficulties and experience freedom and joy! With no wrong notes to play, every child can feel successful! What a beautiful gift! Thank you!
