My Students
We are a group of 4th grade students who know flexibility in life is an asset. We are working hard to learn our 4th grade curriculum in a classroom environment which allows us to be flexible in our thinking, our attitudes, our schedules, and our seating. We live in a low-income community with limited resources, yet we know our most important resources come from the people who care about us and want us to succeed, our school that supports our learning and development, and one another.
We are scientists, engineers, mathematicians, writers, poets, artists, inventors, and changers of the world.
We are curious about life and the world around us. We have freedom in our learning through choices of research and projects and choices in how and where we learn.
My Project
We want to be able to move from place to place, rather than being confined to a desk all day. We are an active group, with several students diagnosed with ADHD. We have a hard time sitting still, so we are constantly trying to move as we work (often by unsafely tipping our chairs). We brainstormed ideas on ways we could stay more focused, stay safe, and be able to move around. We thought having wobble chairs would make moving safer (as well as being portable).
Moving our bodies is good for our brains.
It can be challenging trying to sit still all day. Imagine being 9 years old and trying to sit still for any given period of time....not easy to do. While we are able to move throughout the day, the reality is we do have times where we need to stay at one spot for a period of time to focus on our work. Having wobble balls would help us stay focused, while still allowing our bodies the movement we need in order to do so. With these stools, we can move from place to place throughout the day, and continue to be successful learners.
Students want flexibility in where they work and who they work with, and these stools afford them the opportunity to be mobile, yet remain focused on their academic goals.
More than half of students from low‑income households
