My Students

We are a Title I charter school serving a diverse range of students in fully inclusive classrooms.

Our school focuses on Project Based Learning with a real-world connection.

Our teachers design projects that go across multiple content areas. Projects are designed to allow for collaboration, critique and revision. We believe students are engaged in learning when their voices and choices are respected.

A high percentage of our students come from homes where English is a second language. We have a high percentage of students who receive free and reduced-price lunch.

My Project

Imagine a kindergarten class growing their own vegetables. How exciting it is to poke the seeds into the ground, water them, and watch them grow. The children have so many questions: how does a carrot grow underground? Why does lettuce need water? How does a radish taste?

We want to create a portable vegetable garden that will teach our kindergarteners science and math concepts, and will encourage healthy food choices.

We will plant vegetables in plastic milk crates. The milk crate gardens are easy to move. We can place them in sunny locations outdoors, and easily move them into the classroom for study. While our vegetables grow outdoors, we will plant carrot and radish seeds in the clear glass root viewers so we can see how vegetables grow underground.

Our students will learn science and math concepts by growing their own vegetables. We will make scientific observations and predictions of the plants. They will count seeds and sprouts, and measure their growth. Kindergarteners will draw their new plants as they grow and change.

They will be so excited to taste their harvest. Even picky eaters are willing to try vegetables they might never eat at home.

The milk crates are very durable and can be replanted each season. Our milk crate garden will be used by students for years to come.
