FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Grant's classroom raised $1,704
This project is fully funded
I am proposing a project for the students with disabilities that I work with. I am a special education movement and dance teacher in a New York City public school The students are primarily autistic, some with pervasive developmental disabilities. Most of the students have great difficulty negotiating the space around them, have difficulty with balance, fine and gross motor skills and have severe sensory deficits. I work with 76 students ranging in age from 3 years old to 13 years old.
I would like to supplement the dance and movement activities we do with instruments, puppets, scarves, hula hoops, along with workout mats and safety cones for their safety and to guide them in activities. Folkdance, dance and activity dvd's and videos would also be needed to help them visualize activities. A small television with a built in dvd player is also needed. Many of the students have receptive language delays and do not understand what is communicated to them. The use of visuals helps them to understand what is expected of them. Therefore the use of videos is very helpful. Music also keeps their interest and helps them to focus on activities.
Movement and dance activities not only help with physical development, but also enhance their cognitive, social and metacognitive skills. Autistic students have great difficulty in social situations. They are uncomfortable socializing and communicating with their peers. Using dance and movement in the classroom helps them to develop some of these skills and break through the communication barrier.
