Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a colorful mix of economic classes, a treasure trove of stories and talents, and a diverse collection of intellectual abilities. Conversations run the gamut from soccer, football, or basketball scores, to what happened in the latest episode of Riverdale and why Lil Tecca is a better (hotter) singer/band than My Chemical Romance. The walls are covered with standards that we are working on, drawings of superheroes, flowers, and caricatures of different sorts.

Walk into my classroom any day and you will find enthusiastic learners.

You might see one kid with a book, trying to sneak in a few more minutes of reading because "I can't help it. I'm at the best part!" However, quite a few might cringe at the thought of reading and speaking in non-social situations. It is not unusual for me to ask a student to explain their answer in their native language and ask another student to interpret it for me or we use Google Translate (thank goodness for Google Translate).

My Project

The pandemic has changed everything. At this point, many are still weighing school options, distance, blended, modified in person schedules, etc. Moving forward, it is apparent that technology will play a bigger part in school.

Features like Nearpod's Draw it and Google Drawings give students the ability to express themselves in freehand drawing, writing, and an opportunity to show their work.

Seeing what they wrote or drew gives me an opportunity to see whether the students understand what we are doing, find errors, and give feedback when needed. However, our Chromebooks are not touchscreen. Trackpads on Chromebooks and laptops do not always give students the versatility they need for finer details and trackpads tend to cause a lot more hand fatigue.

By giving students their own mice, it becomes easier to navigate through different tabs and lessons and to control mouse movements. With better control comes better ways to freehand draw and write. Plus, the possibility for the spread of germs, whether Covid, common cold or flu are lessened because each student will have their own.
