This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fairly new to teaching special education. I teach at a Title I school and I was given a brand new classroom in the middle of the school year with very few supplies. My students have severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are nonverbal, have physical impairments, visual impairments, and some are wheelchair-bound. These students are sweet as can be and deserve a proper classroom that stimulates their brains. Their smiles brighten up our day, but I'd like to make them smile more often with items that spice up our classroom and their lives.

My Project

I'm always on the hunt for items to make our classroom the best it can be. I need more tactile toys and objects to make learning easier for my students with visual impairments. It's hard to teach things like numbers, letters, and shapes to a student that is unable to see them, so these tactile materials will be a wonderful addition to our classroom.

Our motor room is in dire need of a makeover.

Gross motor development is essential for younger children. Unfortunately, many our special education students lack the skills needed to access our playground equipment. This is why we need a proper motor room. A room that allows our students to safely explore while working on strengthening their arms, legs, ability to balance and coordinate movements is what we would like to have. The additional materials would benefit several students because our school's entire special ed department uses the same motor room. It gets the most use on days when the weather isn't cooperating, but often times we allow students to go to the room to release energy that's preventing them from focusing so they can properly learn.
