Motivational Speaker for Students with Disabilities
My students need a mentor who has been in their shoes and can talk to them about managing a learning disability in college.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Frank's classroom raised $633

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a special education teacher, I work with students who have had the greatest academic struggles. In my classroom, we work on building literacy skills, critical thinking, and confidence.
My school is a transfer high school in New York City.
Students who have had trouble succeeding in traditional high schools come to our school looking for a second chance. For many of them, the challenges that can face young people growing up in poverty have hit them especially hard. My students have endured more than their fair share of violence and inequality. Yet they have refused to give up on their educations, continuing to attend high school well past the age at which they could drop out.
Some of my students struggle with basic reading and writing skills, and many have taken and failed standardized tests over and over again. Their resilience is astounding. My students have picked themselves up from failure over and over again, and are determined to graduate high school and defy the expectations of people who told them they never would. They are truly inspiring.
My Project
The Eye to Eye Mentoring program connects young people with learning disabilities with mentors who have had similar experiences. When Matt Brown, the mentor from Eye to Eye, comes in to talk to my students, they will have the opportunity to dialogue with him. This will give them the chance to learn how someone with a learning disability has managed to achieve his goals, advocate for the support he needs in college, and understand that he is smart and capable.
For some of my students with learning disabilities, years of academic struggle have made them feel inadequate and stupid. Many of them say they hate school and want nothing to do with college. I support my students to choose what they want to do after high school, because college is not what everyone wants to invest their time and money in. However, I want them to feel that they have a choice - that the myriad post-graduation options in our nation are all valid and possible for them.
My students have had few opportunities to meet people with learning disabilities who can discuss how they overcame the challenges they faced in school.
Meeting a mentor who can help motivate and inspire them could be life-changing as they consider their identity as learners and what they want to do after high school.
